NITROUS OXIDE

WHAT IS NITROUS OXIDE?
Nitrous Oxide is a safe and effective agent that is mixed with oxygen to help make you feel more comfortable and relaxed during potentially uncomfortable procedures. Although it does not eliminate pain, it can help make you feel more comfortable and reduce anxiety.

HOW DOES NITROUS OXIDE WORK?
The nitrous oxide and oxygen system delivers a safe mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen inhaled through a mask providing you control over administration. You will breathe normally through your mouth and nose and should feel the effects within a few short minutes.

HOW WILL I FEEL WHILE USING NITROUS OXIDE?
Most patients report it makes them feel relaxed and calm. You will be awake and able to communicate with your healthcare team. Once you stop inhaling the gas mixture, you will start feeling back to normal in 5 to 10 minutes.

CAN I DRIVE HOME AFTER USING NITROUS OXIDE?
Yes, as long as no other medications were taken at the time that would prevent you from safely driving and you have met all other discharge criteria. The effects of the Nitrous Oxide are completely out of your system within a few minutes of your last inhalation.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF NITROUS OXIDE USE?
Side effects are usually minimal. With our self-administered system you are in control of how you are feeling. Some common, but rare side effects are headache, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Hoarseness or change of voice is also common, but temporary.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER THE USE OF NITROUS OXIDE?
While nitrous oxide has been used during medical and dental procedures for decades, it is considered an add-on service and is not covered by insurance. The cost of Nitrous Oxide use during your procedure is $100.00 and must be paid prior to your appointment.
